Nanyang (now known as Southeast Asia) was one of the main destinations for Chinese migrants and we will explore how these pioneers coped with settling down in a foreign land and how they integrated their culture with the countries they chose to build their futures and raise their families. Through their reflections, the audience will be lead to understand how the gaps between the different cultures were bridged. The emigration of Ethnic Chinese (also called “the Han people” or Chinese in ancient times) were said to begin during the Shang dynasty. Subsequently, many Chinese stayed overseas due to many reasons including business, to seek refuge or for religious purposes. Larger numbers migrated to countries in the South China Seas after the expeditionary voyages of Admiral Cheng Ho, a favored eunuch of Ming emperor, Yong Le. Three primary reasons for the emigration of Ethnic Chinese: economic reasons after The Voyages of Cheng Ho, post Opium War migration and the move from Fujian-Guangdong to Indonesia. Where to Stay?
The cosmopolitan urban-dwellers of Singapore enjoy the comfort of modern living, yet they continue to have plenty to complain about. This infotainment travelogue compares living conditions in rural areas with lack of modern technology against modern city living, in the hope that viewers may come to realize that where they live and stay may just be the most comfortable after all. In each episode, two hosts will head to two different countries or different areas in the same countries. One of the hosts will travel to a place far from civilization, to experience the local way of life. For a short period of time, the host will live with a local, and spend a few days with him or her, including eating the same food and staying under the same roof. Urban city dwellers have difficulties coping when they do not have access to modern conveniences and technology. The other host will head to a modern city.
